Projects

Our project team leads multiple projects each academic year, focusing on improving sustainability practices

In Winter 2026, Zero Waste McMaster had the opportunity to work with the SUSTAIN 2SS3 class as a Community Project Champion working towards a composting advocacy project. We guided students to make educational content about sustainable resources for off campus students with the goal of reducing knowledge gaps in waste organization. As well as create several “Misconception Monday” posts that we’ll be posting throughout the 2026/2027 year.

ZWM worked to get compost bins into MSU-owned coffee shops–The Grind and Union Market. Prior to 2022, coffee grounds were going straight to the landfill. Given our member’s initiative, coffee shops are more aware of the composting programs available on campus (2022-2023).

Since ZeroWaste McMaster began, the club has highlighted local sustainable businesses and services. In 2026, we promoted ChaTime’s ‘Bring Your Own Cup’ initiative to reduce cup waste on campus. The Baywest Café and The Corner Café at McMaster’s Children's Hospital offer their own ‘Bring Your Own Cup’ service to customers as well.

Sewing Lessons

Do you want to learn how to sew? Need to mend your clothes or bags? Come join us at Thode Makerspace! We'll be hosting workshops in 2026-2027 with the aim of reducing textile waste through sewing. These workshops will include safety training and start with beginner projects to make sewing machines less intimidating.  If you have sewing experience and are interested in volunteering, sign up here!  Not interested in sewing, but you have extra fabric or patterns lying around? Drop by the Thode Makerspace and donate them! Follow our Instagram for updates.
